Photovoltaic Panels - Harvest the Sun Light
Monday 18 January 2010 @ 6:58 am

There is a lot of energy in sunlight and that energy can be converted to electricity with photovoltaic panels. These panels are made up of several photovoltaic cells which are constructed of treated silicon which creates an electrical charge when exposed to sunshine.

Each photovoltaic cell produces just a small amount of electricity, so they are wired together into panels to provide enough current for common household appliances.

Photovoltaic cells come in three basic varieties. Monocrystalline are the most efficient but also the most expensive. They consist of a single crystal cut from an ingot of silicon.

Polycrystalline are the most common and slightly less efficient than monocrystalline. The silicon they are made from have several small crystals.

Amorphous cells are made by spreading the silicon on another material like stainless steel. These cells are cheap to produce but produce significantly less power than the other two types. This means that photovoltaic panels must be larger to produce the same amount of electricity.

Monocrystalline panels are slightly more efficient in low light conditions, but the difference is not significant. When choosing photovoltaic panels the most significant factor is the amount of available space. If you have lots of room you can install amorphous panels for less money.

As mentioned above, individual photovoltaic cells are wired together into panels which can produce more electricity. The panels themselves can be wired together in parallel or in series to produce a variety of currents suitable for almost any use.

The panels and arrays produce Direct Current (DC) power so it must be converted to Alternating Current (AC) for most purposes. This is accomplished with an inverter.

The AC current from the inverter can be used to power most household appliances. It can also be connected to the breaker box from the utility company so that solar electricity can act as a backup system to regular power supplies. The advantage of using both systems is that if there is any excess electricity produced by the sun it is fed back into the grid for a credit against the homeowner’s electricity bill.

IT’S STILL A “JUNGLE” OUT THERE
… Or How US Beef-Industry Feeding Practices Are a Source of Concern

If you think about farmers raising cattle, you probably conjure up something like this happy cow scene: Mellow heifers quietly grazing on the lush grass of the rolling countryside, lazily swishing their tails at pesky bugs. New-born and young calves getting nourishment from the milk in their mothers’ teats. For us here at Grinning Planet, such images make us reminisce about our days in the Mu Alpha Mu fraternity, when we’d hang out at the Dairy Queen every Friday after class singing all the great milk-drinking songs.

But back to the dreamy visions of cow country. It seems there is a nightmarish underbelly here, and much of the nightmare centers on animal feed.

While it’s true that cows typically spend the first year or two of their lives grazing on pasture, there are two ugly facts about how “agribusiness” in the US feeds cows:

A baby cow does not typically feed from its mother’s teat, but rather is fed a bottled formula mix that contains (among other things) the blood of cows that have previously been slaughtered. Eww!

Once a maturing cow leaves the pasture for the feed lots, it is typically given a feed mix that contains slaughterhouse wasteparts from cows, pigs, and chickens that have been ground up, rendered, and mixed with grain or other feed stocks. Double eww!

Basically, those in the ranching and feedlot industries have turned cowswhich are purely vegetarian by designinto meat-eaters, and to some extent, unwitting cannibals. Most people have a visceral negative reaction to the concept of cannibalism, even when it occurs naturally in a species. But in this case, the cows’ cannibalism is 100% at man’s insistence. Profit and pricing pressures are behind itslaughterhouse waste is a cheap source of food for the grower’s operations.

Maybe you think serving up cow’s blood to calves and rendered slaughterhouse waste to feedlot cattle are shady, fringe practices. But such feedings are standard in the beef industry, and completely within current regulations. The beef industry has aggressively tried to quell any discussion of the issue, and they generally get full support from the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration.

Though “recycling” of animal slaughter waste may seem somewhat appealing from a waste-disposal perspective, the barbarity of these practices is enough to make one cringe. But there is an even worse problem with these methods. In the next Eco-Logical, we’ll talk about how Mad Cow Disease relates to these feeding practices, and we’ll offer some suggestions for finding beef that is free of freakish feeds.

The Controls and Protection System of Wind Turbines
Saturday 14 November 2009 @ 5:54 pm

Yaw system used to align a HAWT with the wind however some yaw systems can be offset from the vertical axis. In addition, the following components usually are packaged as part of small wind turbines. These include 1) the control and protection system, 2) the tower (tilt-up towers, guyed towers and non-tilt-up or self-supporting towers) and depending on the application, alance-of-system (BOS) are often sold separately. With a rooftop turbine, an $800 tower is replaced by a $39 roof mounted tripod, or a length of pipe attached to the side of the house. According to Ron Stimmel of the American Wind Energy Association, “…rooftop wind turbines still account for only 1 percent or so of the 10,000 small wind turbines that are sold each year in the country.” For this reason, few performance statistics are available from actual owners. Especially if you get to the point where you are eliminating a good percentage of your power bill, you will be really enjoying the extra savings. In todays economy every dollar counts and a micro wind turbine is a great way to save some green. Also, a home wind turbine will drastically reduce your negative impact on the environment. You will no longer be contributing bad greenhouse gasses and allowing the power companies to pollute. Currently, the use of more traditional methods for generating power such as the burning of fossil fuels, generate harmful greenhouse gas emissions - very bad for the earths atmosphere and our planet!Tidal, Solar and Wind energy are generally referred to as Green energy sources. This is because they are natural, clean energy sources which do not produce harmful toxins or emissions and are more friendly to the earth and its atmosphere. Further to this, they are a long term, sustainable source of energy and they are incredibly cost effective.

Algebra in School and Real Life
Sunday 4 October 2009 @ 3:09 am

Algebra is good at differentiating relationships between things that vary from time to time. For example, the relationship between a person’s income and advancement of his expenses could be resolved and predicted using simple algebraic equations. Maths is not an easy subject for most pupils. Many software programs are available with a mixed bag of study introduction so students of whatever intellect level can find the way that works for him/her. These software titles also serves students to comprehend utility of Algebra in real life as well as within industry solutions. Larger functions employed in algebra include Graphing radical inequalities, Solving compound inequalities, Solving quadratic inequalities, Adding and Subtracting matrices etc.
Algebra is an important area of study but students can be disheartened initially if they do not work hard enough in early stages. This makes fundamental math skills important to help students successfully advance from algebra and further into graduate math with confidence.

How to Successfully Deal With Algebra

Helpful algebra software programs provide more than what can be found in the students practice books, such as homework help, interactive guidelines, games and a worksheet tool or graphing calculator. The high quality software will have all these features as well as easy usability and coverage of wide area of topics.

The learning tools are always useful where methods like text, audio, animation, video and games are put in to use. All the important topics should also be covered from Pre-Algebra through Algebra II. Important topics in these courses are: Finding complement of an angle, inverse of functions, finding degree of polynomial, determine if line is Subtracting polynomials , Finding domain of a function, Graphing a parabola and Adding rational expressions etc.

How to Use Algebra Software

Some algebraic software shows results only, while other (much more suitable for elementary algebra) show all the steps as well as explanations of math rules that are being used. For students, ease of use of the software is the number one requirement. Thus, the software better be loaded with value added options like high quality and timely user assistance, enclosed help options, and easily laid out algebra wizards.

What is Algebra?

It is an domain of mathematics that use letters in place of numbers to derive results for a given situation. It is this abstraction that often frightens many and thrills some. Algebra topics range by working through simple tasks such as factoring trinomials and eventually progressing on to finding the product of matrices. In most cases, just as in any other math related class, students start by adding, subtracting and simplifying algebraic expressions. later on, they would move on to more advanced stages of solving algebraic equations using the greatest common factors and converting fractions in to decimals.

Exponents and Radicals and Graphing Oh My!

There are many advanced themes. Firstly there are exponents. A power is the tiny number placed as superscript to a number or algebraic expression. In this example (x + y)3 where the 3 is the power and refers the power to which that number is exponentiated. The above algebraic expression is expressed as, x plus y to the third power. While working with powers you will often see exercises that require you to add, subtract, multiply and divide. If you pick up the fundamental principles, you will shortly get down to working with rational and negative powers and if you think those are not challenging enough, hopefully radicals will spin your head. A radical, in simple terms, is the reversing of an power. The V beside 4 denote a radical expression which means, the square root of 4, which equals 2. The inverse of “V” symbol is “^” which denotes that the number it refers to is a multiple of the principle number. Therefore, 2^2 which is read as 2 to the 2nd power, equals 4. Moreover, exponents can be added, subtracted, multiplied or divided by radicals. Radicals can be changed into exponents and exponents back into radicals. If exponents and radicals aren’t enough, there is always graphing. The best way to start with graphing is to draw lines and try to figure out if they are horizontal, vertical or neither. Another question to ask is whether the line has an x-intercept or a y-intercept Can you find the slope of the line ? you master the mathematical art of graphing, you will learn a whole new world filled with parabolas and hyperbolas.

Want Help?

While you are learning algebra if the terms and concepts seem too much to handle, relax and take a break. Did you know that there are many resources out there that can help you master radical inequalities, quadratic formulas and polynomials . The tradition is to decide on a math tutor, but the cutting-edge algebraic software are no different. In fact, they are better than math tutors. You can also use algebra calculators or algebra solvers. any of these tools can assist you become an algebra guru in very little time.

Cancer of the Mesothelium Patients May Be Benefiting from Gene Therapy Treatments
Wednesday 22 July 2009 @ 6:27 am

Doctors who specialize in cancer treatment decide what course of treatment to go with to each patient. The options are endless. There exists no standard treatment option for mesothelioma patients. Mesotheliomas lack of agreed-upon treatment is due to low a treatment success rate, rareness, a high mortality rate and a small number of studies providing meaningful stats.

Mesothelioma patients have historically had a bleak outlook, but doctors have recently made progress. Traditional treatments for cancer are surgery (removing the tumor and surrounding tissue), chemotherapy (poisoning cancerous cells) and radiation (killing cancer cells with radiation) All three methods have problems. Traditional radiation therapy has not worked well with mesothelioma patients. In hopes to lessen damage to healthy tissue, researches are studying ways to aim radiation right at the tumor.

Surgery takes out the mesothelial cancerous tissue around the tumor. The surgery is difficult and challenging, with unknown effects or benefits to patients. Common chemotherapy drugs that work on other types of cancer usually do not work on mesothelioma, and different combinations of chemotherapy drugs have been tried without a lot of success. Like radiation, researchers are focusing their work on controlling the physical location of the treatment with an emphasis on the pleural cavity.

The death rate for mesothelioma is so high that many of even the most sophisticated techniques in cancer treatment are tried out on patients. Such treatments include anti-angiogenesis drugs like thalidomide and biologic therapies agent interleukin 2. A new drug that has shown results in improving survival is pemetrexed (brand name Alimta).

Considered by oncologists is where the tumor is located, what stage the mesothelioma is in, and the age and health of the patient. Two exotic ways of attacking mesothelioma are gene therapy and photodynamic therapy. Patients afflicted with mesothelioma are benefitting in these clinical trials.

Diagnosing Mesothelioma Yourself Cannot Be Done Accurately, it Requires Medical Expertise and Tests
Saturday 13 June 2009 @ 2:39 am

Mesothelioma is known to have a few primary symptoms. Pleural mesotheliomas primary symptom is a lack of breath as a consequence of pleural effusion ” fluid being built up in the pleura, or membrane, encompassing the lung. The next most common symptomis chest pain due to the tumor invading the chest wall. Additional symptoms include night sweats, weight loss and exhaustion.

The main indicatorof patients with abdomen mesothelioma, which originates in the abdomen, is fluid buildup (known as ascites) in the abdomen causing abdominal swelling, pain in the abdomen, and blockage of the bowel.

Its vital to know that these symptoms could be caused by a myriad of diseases or conditions. Nevertheless, you should see a doctor if you have been exposed to asbestos and have experienced any of these symptoms.

Peritoneal mesothelioma cancer is difficult to diagnose, because the symptoms are also experienced in less serious health issues. Symptoms typical for mesothelioma:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest or lower back pain associated with an excess of fluid in the pleura
  • Fever
  • Upset stomach
  • Breathy voice
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Spitting up blood

Self-diagnosis should never be attempted. Sufferers of the above symptoms should not panic, and should consult their doctor. The standard way to confirm the condition is with a biopsy. A pathologist removes a piece of tissue from the region that cancer is suspected and performs an examination that will result in a very accurate diagnosis. Biopsies are typically pain-free.

A CT scan (Computer Tomography is an option if you dont want a biopsy. This is an X-ray procedure where a scanner takes many cross-sectional images as it rotates around the body. Once in a while, a dye is ingested by the patient to help define the images. CT scans have an advantage over biopsies by being easier and non-invasive, and they are recognized as being effective in diagnosis. Opinions vary whether a CT scan or biopsy is cheaper. If there are irregularities, a biopsy may also be ordered to determine if a tumor exists, and if so, if the tumor is benign or malignant. Pleural mesothelioma can also be diagnosed by looking for cancer cells in a sample of fluid from the pleura.

These methods can also diagnose and screen patients for mesothelioma. Patients who may think they are at risk but do not display any symptoms are typically screened, to ensure they are not at risk to get the cancer or to catch the cancer early. Patients who have in their past inhaled asbestos, should be screened for mesothelioma.

Algebra as a Science

Algebra is thought as one of the crucial branches of mathematics which explains how to deal with all situations involving numbers and variables. Naturally and historically, there is so much to articulate about teaching and learning of Algebra as a generalized arithmetic which goes through systematic mathematical operations such as induction, generalization and proof. So, gradually students get various means to enhance their Algebra level, for example by getting the information from tutors or software systems, which provide step by step illustrative solutions. Packages designed for algebra studying offer all the available methods for solving specific problems with a technological touch. Many students don’t even know how very usable Algebra is! They complain about its impracticality neglecting that Algebra, broadly maths, teaches their mind how to think logically and correctly. The typical way to learn Algebra is in school, from being a kid till becoming an adult pupils get their information from the teacher. With the advancement of technology, new techniques have been institutionalized to learn Algebra, such as using computer software packages which is a more handy way to learn Algebra. It’s a kind of gradual tool to have the information delivered to pupil’s minds.

Algebra’s Covered Area

Like most leading sciences, Algebra handles a lot of areas and includes many theories and concepts. Gcf, or Greatest Common Factor , is one such constructs. Gcf means to rewrite the polynomial as a product of simpler polynomials or of polynomials and monomials. Solving fractions is one of the fundamental parts of algebra which fundamentally gives pupils the chance to apply it to the real world. non-linear function represents any function which is a solution of a quadratic polynomial. Among other critical elements of algebra, multiplying and dividing radicals is also one of the main ones. An individual can multiply and divide with radicals only if the index, or root, is the same. Other related areas are Adding and Subtracting Radicals; an individual can add or subtract radical terms only if both the index and the radicand are the same. Matrix operations include adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Other main areas are finding x-intercept of a line and y-intercept of a line - to get the x-intercept of a line, substitute zero for y in the equation and vice versa for finding y-intercept of a line.

The Approachable Algebra
Sunday 29 March 2009 @ 6:50 pm

It is safe to say that algebra is the heart of mathematics. An in depth knowledge of algebra and its basics is required before you could work on more complex mathematical problems. If someone asks you to get the product of 223 and 112, you can easily do it manually or with a computer. However, in a case where you need to work around the exponential of 223 and logarithm of 112, you will surely need an algebraic software application. Graphing a circle will be easy for this given formula X2 + Y2 = 4 but when it comes for an inequality like (X-2)2 + (Y-4)2 > 20 then it will be quite harder to plot the graph. In this situation algebra software package can help you a great deal since you only need to enter the inequality and graph will be plotted within very little time. These software systems can easily work out any kind of algebraic, arithmetical and radical expressions of any level of difficulty.

Finding Domain and Range of a Function

Now it is very easy to derive the domain and range of functions like Y = X2, you can just tell that X and Y can take any real number from the X-Y plane but have you ever thought of defining the domain and range of log(tan 2x + sin 3x) = cosine(-4)(2x). But thanks to algebra calculating systems, you can now solve these complex problems in very little time while being able to comprehend every step of the way that it takes you to successfully solve the mathematical question.

Coordinate Geometry

Now you can easily find the focus and directrix and whether parabola opens up or down by just inserting the equation into algebra Application. Addition, subtraction and multiplication of trinomials are quite tiresome, since they involve lots of terms to manipulate. However, by leaving the job up to algebra calculators, you will be able to get results within a shorter period with 100% accuracy. Similarly, algebra calculators can save the trouble for you in calculating matrices of 33 or 44 order or its opposite matrices.

So, with the introduction of algebra software packages, the times where you feared the sight of indices, rational numbers or radical equations, comes to an end. If you could not stand geometry, you may even start liking it henceforth thanks to the computerized algebra systems that will automatically graph everything you ever need.
