Laptops for Gaming Turning into Consumer Gadgets
Thursday 21 August 2008 @ 9:52 pm

Gaming laptops were once only for those who had money and not for the masses. The systems were sold in low numbers but each systems had a large profit margin. They were the type of notebook that everybody desired, but the price didn’t fall in their budget. They were like the highest grade of what was capable with notebook technology, the best laptops in existence. I guess we all got excited about them but the masses would highly unlikely buy laptops that were so expensive. The outlook for gaming laptops is now seen by the giant companies as a great opportunity for themselves.

Laptops for gaming are typically not affordable by most people and large brands know they can benefit from the high profit margins even further with their bulk manufacturing. This would be a good chance to make considerable revenues for them. With their deep marketing budgets I am confident they can get anyone to buy laptops like these. Do the smaller retailers even have a chance with this kinda competition? Now laptops for gaming will no longer be perceived as a niche market. Buyers will additionally gather tons more peace of mind when spending a big amount of money.

The manufacturers new laptop computers are receiving a large amount of accolades as being the best laptops from the magazines. In my view the local system builders must take action on this if they are to prosper. Specifying the specification is a thing all us techies prefer. These particular potential customers are generally really knowledgeable with the technology and can compare each of the parts by themselves. If choosing speed and aesthetics, these purchasers generally favour the former. All gamers concur that it is a positive change. It will force prices to slide and make the latest technology cheaper for people. Its difficult to predict what could occur really because the industry is a fast moving one. New innovations are continuously coming out and that should hold costs constantly high. Although I still guess outcomes will be good because of the saturated market.

Gaming Portables To Turn Slim And Slick
Saturday 28 June 2008 @ 4:33 am

Everyone needs laptop computers it seems. How did we ever exist without them? Taiwanese companies have said raw material shortages will affect deliveries this year due to the astronomical demands. It seems like once there are pending orders those will only grow because demand for laptops is not slowing down at all. The histerical thing is that even when you get the latest thing out it’ll soon be out of date.

I’ve seen a growing number of people enquiring about gaming laptops. If you’re a games player with a tight budget the great thing is that you can get a gaming notebook a lot less expensive now because the average life is dropping. For those who desire portability, the performance laptops provide in terms of gaming shouldn’t be frowned upon much longer as performance is improved. Smaller components that perform faster and are more heat efficient also means that gone are the ages of the enormous laptops for gaming. Power of computers should infinitely be a distance ahead of laptops but its still inspiring to see. Everyone always desires to squeeze insane amounts of juice from compact packages so I would assume thats where gaming laptops are destined.

Custom built laptops have been about for a great length of time now and despite major companies peddling pre-built laptops through retail it seems like there will forever be computer assemblers out there ready to build something unique to your needs. One thing with custom laptops is that you can obtain higher spec components. It just allows the buyer more choice when it comes down to it. Premade notebooks are targeted at consumers who have similar requirements and that is probably not you right? Specialist users need custom laptops for this reason. I like that fact that there are plenty of smaller companies giving great support for custom laptops. Because of this buyers will allow the big brand name.

Next gen notebook computers do seem like a tantalising option. This year it seems as though low cost portables are the popular item. Clearly this will be something massive in third world markets. Supremely people would want an ultraslim portable with a 15 inch screen. If we overlook processing speed I’m certaiin we would see those types of laptops today. Manufacturers are encasing greater performance into notebooks and it seems like gaming laptops will get thinner and lightweight. Notebook computers get released every 12 months and these low cost portables most likely made a lot of companies change their forecasts.

Sundails: Do they Really Tell Time?
Saturday 7 June 2008 @ 10:37 pm

Sundial History

Sundials have been around since the days of the Sumerians, some five thousand years ago, and were the earliest known means of keeping time. The first sundials were probably just rods or sticks pounded into the ground, and the shadows cast by those vertical rods (called a gnomon) allowed ancient people to know what time of day it was.

The Greeks and Romans took the basic concept and refined it, using various different shapes of dials to not only tell the time of day, but also what time of year it was by the shadow cast by the gnomon into a cleverly designed bowl. As the centuries went by and technological advances made clocks and watches commonplace, sundials were largely relegated to decorative status in gardens.

Sundails Today

As to whether you can actually tell time by using a sundial, that’s a bit trickier. Modern clocks and watches assume there are exactly twenty-four hours in a day, but isn’t the case, which is why we have to add a 29th day to the month of February every four years.

That may be convenient for modern society, but it means that a sundial, which expresses the true nature of Earth’s elliptical orbit around the sun, is sometimes fast and sometimes slow, depending upon the season. Deep in February, for example, a sundial would be about fifteen minutes slow according to modern timepieces. However, in November, a sundial would appear to be as much as seventeen minutes fast. Such deviation could cause serious problems for the modern world, which depends upon accurate, uniform time throughout the globe. (Interestingly, sundials actually are correct on four days of every year, although those dates may vary: April 15, June 14, September 2, and December 25.)

Of course, your sundial must be oriented correctly. The numbers corresponding to the shadow of the gnomon need to be calibrated according to the specific longitude and latitude of your location. There are various sites on the Internet that can help you set your sundial up correctly. There are also sundial enthusiasts around the world who have formed organizations that will be more than happy to help you get your sundial up and running. Just type “sundials” into your browser and you’ll find lots of information.

So the question remains: can you really tell time with a sundial? The answer is an unqualified yes–and no–depending upon who you talk to. One thing for sure, sundials dress up your garden. And in the garden, do you really care what time it is?

Extend The Life Of Your Laptop Battery
Wednesday 28 May 2008 @ 3:26 pm

If you are the owner of a laptop computer, you know how frustrating it can be when you are working on the laptop and your battery is low. If you are constantly on the go, it is sometimes difficult to find a place to plug in your computer to let it recharge. There are a few things that you can do to help you take care and extend the life of your laptop battery.

General caution should be observed when running the battery of your laptop. A laptop should be plugged in to the AC adaptor whenever possible. This will ensure that your laptop battery is always charged and ready to go when it is needed. Another tip is to not expose your laptop to extreme weather conditions, especially very cold temperatures. A cold battery will run much slower than one that is warm. Also, try not to use your laptop for long periods of time without recharging the battery. This can cause information to be lost if the battery sudden stops working.

When using your battery on your laptop, remember use as little power as you can by adjusting the settings on the laptop. This will make your computer go inactive when not in use for a certain amount of time. Adjusting the power setting is easy if you go into the control panel and set the display time. It is also possible to adjust the brightness of the screen display to help the life of the laptop battery. Remember to turn programs off that you are not using. This will waste battery usage quicker. Also, running movies and videos will quickly drain the battery charge.

When using your laptop battery you will want to make sure you check the battery charge frequently. Charge your laptop as soon as you see the battery getting low. Whenever you can, plug in your computer. It is a good idea to always plug in your computer so that it is ready to go. Also, take care of your battery. It is important to clean the laptop battery and keep it free of dust and debris. Using canned air or a cotton swab on a regular basis can do this. The battery will run longer if it is cleaned frequently.

Another tip is to have an extra battery on hand. These are easily purchased. Have at least one fully charged at all times for a quick battery change. Some laptops can run with two batteries. Most laptops are also compatible with external batteries that can easily be added and changed when necessary. Battery charges that work in the car are also good options for anyone taking their laptops on trips. Also, if you are purchasing a new laptop computer, consider buying a smaller, lightweight version. These are more efficient and are able to run longer on a battery charge than the larger laptop versions. Following these basic tips can help extend the amount of time your computer can run with a battery.

A Beginner Guide to Web Hosting
Tuesday 27 May 2008 @ 2:02 pm

What is web hosting? Whenever you visit a website, what you see on your web browser is essentially just a web page that is downloaded from the web server onto your web browser. In general, a web site is made up of many web pages. And a web page is basically composed of texts and graphic images. All these web pages need to be stored on the web servers so that online users can visit your website.

Therefore, if you plan to own a new website, you will need to host your website on a web server. When your website goes live on the web server, online users can then browse your website on the Internet. Company that provides the web servers to host your website is called web hosting providers.

A well-established web hosting provider sometimes hosts up to thousands of websites. For example, the ‘Best Web Host of the Year 2003′ award winner, iPowerWeb, is a web hosting company that hosts more than 200,000 websites. For that reason, a web hosting company need many web servers (essentially, these are computers) to ’store’ the website. And all these web servers are connected to the Internet through high speed Internet connection and housed in a physical building called ‘data center’. In order to guarantee all the web servers are safe, secure and fully operational all time, a data center is a physically secure 24/7 environment with fire protection, HVAC temperature control, virus detections, computer data backup, redundant power backup and complete disaster recovery capabilities.

What are the different types of web hosting? There are different kinds of web hosting companies out there with different characteristics. The main types of web hosts can be organized into the following categories:

a. Shared Hosting

In shared hosting (also known as virtual web hosting), many websites are sharing the space on the same physical web servers. Depending on the web host, a physical web server can hosts a few hundred to even thousand of different websites at one time. You may wonder if a physical web server is shared by so many websites, will the performance of the web server deteriorate? In fact, web servers are usually equipped with high-end powerful computer, therefore it can support up to a certain number of websites without any problem. But when the web server is overloaded and exceeded the reasonable number of websites that it can support, then you will begin to experience a slower response from the web server.

However, a reputable and experience web hosting provider will constantly monitor the performance of the web server and will add new web servers when deem necessary without sacrificing the benefits of the website owners. Since a physical web server is shared (diskspace, computer processing power, bandwidth, memory) by many websites, the web hosting provider can therefore afford to offer a lower hosting price. For the same reason, websites on the shared hosting would have to accept slower server response time. Typically, shared hosting plans start at $5 - $20 per month.

b. Dedicated Hosting

In contrast to shared hosting, dedicated hosting assigned a specific web server to be used only by one customer. Since a dedicated web server is allocated to only a single customer, the customer has the option to host single/multiple web sites, modify the software configuration, handle greater site traffic and scale the bandwidth as necessary. Therefore, dedicated hosting commands a higher premium and typically starts at $50 per month and can range up to $200 - $500 per month. As a result, dedicated hosting is regularly used by high traffic and extremely important website.

c. Co-location hosting

In dedicated hosting, the web server belongs to the web hosting providers and customers only rent the web server during the hosting period. While in co-location hosting, the customer owns the web server hardware and only housed their web server within the web hosting provider’s secure data center. In this way, the customer has full control over their web server and simultaneously benefit from the 24/7 server monitoring and maintenance provided by the secure data center. Depending on the monthly bandwidth and rack space required, typically co-location hosting range from $500 - $1000 per month.

d. Reseller hosting

In reseller hosting, a web hosting provider offers web server storage to third-party (i.e. reseller) at a discount price, who then resell the web server storage to their customers. Typically, resellers are web consultants including web designers, web developers, or system integration company who resell the web hosting as a add-on service to complement their other range of services. Commonly, resellers can receive up to 50 percent discount on the price of a hosting account from the web hosting provider. And resellers are allowed to decide its own pricing structure and even establish its own branding (in other words, reseller setup its web hosting company on the Internet and start selling web hosting plans under its brand).

To the reseller’s customers, the reseller is the web host provider. In cases when technical problems such as server down and access problem arise, the resellers will have to correspond directly with the actual web host provider. Due to the communication process taken place between customer to reseller and from reseller to actual web host provider and back and forth, undoubtedly problems will take longer time to resolve. Unless you are running your own personal website or non-profit website and willing to take the risks of poor support from the reseller, reseller hosting is generally not a good option.

However, the web hosting market today is filled with resellers that sell lowest price web hosting plans. So, how do you tell between a genuine web hosting provider from a reseller? You don’t judge by the availability of toll-free number alone because some web hosting providers even offer their resellers with their own toll-free number for co-branded technical support. When the reseller’s customer calls the number for technical support, the web host uses the reseller’s name so the customer thinks that the support is coming from the reseller directly. Likewise, don’t be fooled by the professional designed website alone because it is extremely easy to create a professional looked business website nowadays.

In general, resellers can be distinguished from their hosting price and company information. In most cases, a genuine web hosting provider has solid company information such as iPowerWeb.com where they publish its financial background, offices and data centers. In contrast, resellers usually do not have solid company background (here is just an example out of thousands out there). Moreover, the hosting price by resellers is generally below $5 per month. So, why settle for resellers when you can find genuine web hosting providers offering superb quality web hosting at the hosting price ranging between $7 - $10.

Therefore, you should not strive to find the lowest price web hosting companies without first considering the quality of the service and support provided. Don’t expect to find any top-level support if you choose to pay only $2 or $3 per months for your web hosting plan. On the other hand, by paying just slightly more for your hosting plan, you can now discover a list of low cost yet high quality web hosting plans to host your important website. Look at our high quality and cheap web hosting services review and recommendation here.

Advances in Prosthetic Devices Offer Increased Freedom for Amputees
Friday 23 May 2008 @ 7:01 pm

Strong but lightweight materials and advances in technology have
translated into more comfort and higher function for amputees.

In the past artificial limbs were made of wood and existed
without moving joints, so that above the joint amputations in
particular severely limited the mobility of the individual. In
addition, the heavy wooden construction made the use of a
prosthesis difficult and uncomfortable. Now, modern lightweight
materials increase the comfort level of prosthetic use
enormously, and new technology allows much more freedom of
movement, even with above the joint amputations.

Prosthetic devices
with moveable joints have gone through a number of
transformations. Developing from a fairly clumsy mechanical
joint to ones with robotic capability, joints have gone from
operating using the musculature of the affected limb to being
able to directly access electrical impulses from the body of the
amputee, or from a computer within the artificial limb itself.
In addition, robotic devices using built-in computer technology
allow for much more subtle limb movements, allowing for more
natural capability.

This new technology has translated into an immense sense of
freedom for the amputee. People wearing these modern limbs are
running marathons, participating in downhill ski competitions,
and engaging in all sorts of sports and other recreational
activities that were barred to them in the past. Perhaps even
more importantly, they are more easily able to function in the
everyday world, meeting work requirements along with their
non-disabled coworkers, and keeping up with family and friends
in their free time.

An Increase in Self-Esteem

When a previously able-bodied person is suddenly faced with
amputation of one or more limbs, whether because of an accident,
war injury, complications of diabetes, or cancer, the trauma of
the situation is a blow to the individual’s core identity. One’s
body image is shattered, and a host of fears set in: fear of
losing mobility, becoming dependent on others for their basic
care, of facing a lifetime of severely limited opportunities.

Being fitted with a modern, functional artificial limb and then
learning to use it can seem like a kind of miracle. As people
become more proficient and realize the possibilities opening up
to them, their self-esteem soars, and they can begin to look
forward to a productive, happy and option-filled life.

The Future of Prosthetics

The technology continues to improve in this important area of
medicine. Currently, scientific researchers are perfecting a
computerized robotic limb which can be directed by neuronal
impulses in the brain - in other words by an individual’s
thoughts. As the science of prosthetics progresses, it promises
to further enhance the lives of those maimed by amputation.

Four Ways to Make Your Word File “Slim”
Sunday 4 May 2008 @ 5:22 pm

We will talk about some related to your office daily work. Did you encounter the following situation? You want to send an email with a Word file attachment, but the email cannot be send out cause the Word file is too large. And you waste many efforts in making the file slim. You can try the following methods, which can reduce the size a lot.

1. Save as

In Menu, choose “File > Save As”, and save the file with a new name. You can compare the new file with original one; you will find that the file size of new one is much smaller.

You can also work in this way. Select the whole content of the document, copy and paste it to a new blank document and save it. Again, you will that file size of two documents is different.

2. Delete old versions

If there are many old versions kept in the file, the file size will be larger. In Menu, choose “File > Version”, check to see if there is any old version saved. You can delete those versions with no value to make the file slim.

3. Insert picture wisely

“Insert Picture” is one of the main reasons for the word file get fat. Try to insert a smaller picture. You can use graphic editor to reduce the size of picture before insert into the file. The file format should use GIF or JPG and do not use those high-resolution graphic, like BMP.

4. Don’t “Embed True Type Font”

“Embed True Type Font” will increase the size of word file. In Menu, choose “Tools > Options”, switch to “Save” tab page. Confirm that your word file have no true type font, and cancel the “Embed True Type Font” option. If you embed true type font, then choose “Embed characters in use only”.

Try the above four methods, you will see your word file getting slim.

People Are Like Tea Bags
Saturday 3 May 2008 @ 10:21 pm

Put them in hot water and they grow stronger except for those that don’t.

On a recent trip to a distant state, my husband and I unexpectedly met a couple visiting the same sightseer’s monument that we were. After speaking for a while, one of those delightful and unexpected light bulbs went on and we realized they were related to two close friends of ours. So of course, we decided to hang out longer than we had planned and soon we were having dinner and talking as if we had to know everything we could about each other. We talked like long lost friends and because we knew we would probably never see each other again. We spoke secrets the way one does with their hairdresser or the person you sit next to on a plane. Instant intimacy secured with the sureness that no real intimacy or connection would ever develop.

They were a vivacious couple, happily married for over thirty years, developers of a thriving business and parents of three wonderful grown children. Eileen had been the “bad” sister who was always in trouble, the child, whose parents never expected to amount to anything positive. She had dropped out of high school and her parents had suggested that she get a job and not even bother finishing her basic education. Barbara, her “good” sister had breezed through school with excellent grades and a fine reputation. She had always made her parents proud. Barbara and her husband were our close friends. Although we thought we knew them relatively well, we had never heard about Eileen and her family. We thought it strange that we never knew that they existed.

Quite rightly so, Eileen and her husband, were very proud of their accomplishments. They were delighted with the fact that they had fooled the world and that they had played a cosmic joke on all who had predicted their failure. Following their own adventurous path, they had achieved the success that everyone told them they never would.

As the wine flowed and we continued to chat, Eileen started to talk more openly about her family history and more specifically, about her sister. Barbara, she said, always seemed blue and she was forever in some sort of psychotherapy and/or on mood medication for her depression. Eileen was proud of the fact that she had never needed psychotherapy or taken medication to lift her spirits. In fact, she was very clear that she couldn’t understand any one who did.

I listened carefully to Eileen’s version of life, of her certitude that if only one has the power of positive thinking and decides to go after what he or she wants, one will achieve his or her goal. It was incomprehensible to her that there could be any reason for anyone to ever “fall apart.” She lived in a world based on ‘wonder woman’ illusions, a world where all people had symbolic gold bracelets that could stop speeding bullets and ensure no emotional harm.

I have heard many people speak as Eileen did, with no comprehension that for some people just getting up in the morning is an act of enormous courage and that sometimes they needed all the help they could get just to make it through the day. For a variety of reasons, many that we know, and just as many that we don’t, some people are like tea bags: put them in hot water and they do grow stronger. Others, worn out, also like tea bags, tear and break, messily spilling their contents adrift in the boiling water.

After years as a psychologist, as someone who has “seen it all,” I know less about what makes the difference between those who make it through life with ease and those who don’t than I ever did. What I do know though, is for those that get through life with minimal scalding, I rejoice. And for those who need help, I stretch out my hand.

Cell Phone - Why Should I Upgrade
Tuesday 29 April 2008 @ 11:17 am

We hear from friends or just general chat by people wanting to upgrade their cell phones. There are a number of very good reasons to upgrade but unfortunately the main reason people upgrade and without thinking is because the cell phone manufacturers are blitzing us with advertising on a daily basis with new features. I bet you can pinpoint a few friends who have new cell phones and have no idea as to how to go about using all the key features.

Upgrading your cellular phone needs some careful thinking. Many of us upgrade for fashion purposes to keep up with modern looks, understandable if you have a cell phone from the early years you might want something a little more portable and flexible in use.

Upgrading still costs money so choose wisely. There are many different upgrade options today such as Camera cell phones; PDA Cell Phones, GPS Cell phones and now we have the new line of 3G cell phones available. Honestly the best place to choose a cell phone is on the Internet, it’s your decision and not the sale rep at some store twisting your arm for a sale and blinding you with useless information.

You need to know the differences and the different functionality of the cell phones before you just go ahead and upgrade. By doing a little research you get to choose exactly what fits your needs and budget. GPS phones (Global Positioning Satellite) are widely used by people with a love for climbing or adventure walking in remote regions.

GPS phones can be pinpointed to a pacific area should you be lost or in need of assistance, long distance drivers and employers also find good use for these phones. Employers can trace the whereabouts of employees or the phones themselves if lost or stolen.

PDA phones are ideal for people who like using pocket organisers. These phones are expensive but have similar functionality to that of a PC, ideal for office workers or sales reps.

Camera phones are self explanatory, simply a phone that can take photos. There is more to camera cell phones but in a nut shell that’s what they do. They are classed more of a fun phone to have and prove very popular among all age groups. Once you have an idea of what the different phones do and can’t do you are better placed to come up with an upgrade decision.

Flip phones are very popular at the moment, these are the phones with the pop up screen, they are available in Camera, PDA and GPS format but be aware they are not for everyone, I personally do not find them very user friendly but that’s my opinion, I like to just answer the incoming call without messing around with the phone.

The phones on today’s market a very light weight compared to the large style from years ago, those of you who still use these type phones today should look at upgrading and come to terms with the technology of today.

General advice:

If you experience a bad reception on a regular basis you should check with your cell phone carrier first before changing the phone, most of the time it tends to be a bad signal due to the cellular phone carrier rather than the fault of your phone, many people just jump and buy the phone only to find that they same problem is reoccurring. In certain area’s you may need a small cell phone antenna or booster costing very little to get a better reception.

Powering down very quickly:

If you find that your cell phone powers down too quickly the chances are you need a new battery, once again many people exchange the whole cell phone instead of just the battery. The conception that batteries are almost as costly as the cell phone is untrue. You can get batteries at very competitive pricing along with third party battery from different suppliers.

No Power:

If you find that you have no power in your cell phone even after charging for hours, it could be one of three things. Firstly the battery in the cell phone could be completely dead, secondly the recharge supply unit could have a problem and last of all it could be the cell phone itself, by eliminating the first two you could save yourself money. It may all seem common sense but you would be surprised at how many good working cell phones are thrown out.

CCNA Cisco Certification Testing Center Tips
Wednesday 2 April 2008 @ 10:22 am

Candidates can register for the CCNA exam (640-801 exam or 640-821 INTRO or 640-811 ICND ) at Pearson VUE or Prometric testing centers.

In order to do their best, candidates should know what to expect at the testing center for the Cisco CCNA certification exam. Since testing center guidelines may vary from one center to another, we recommend that the candidates call the local testing center to check about the guidelines. Here are some points providing information on what you can expect at the exam center:

Re-certification: If you have taken a Cisco CCNA certification exam before, find out your Cisco ID and specify it before you start with your registration. This will ensure that you get proper credit for the exam and will help avoid any duplicate records.

Reach before time: We strongly suggest reaching the test center before time. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of the appointment.

Sign the logbook: You may be asked to sign-in the logbook upon arrival as well as upon departure. Do check on this.

You must carry your identification: You will be required to show a valid identification (ID), perhaps including a recent, recognizable photograph. If the supervisor questions your ID, you may be required to show another ID. You should check the testing center guidelines on identification and take all supplemental identification documents with you.

Generally Accepted Identification:

Passport

Photobearing driver’s license with signature

National/Military identification card

The following MAY not be accepted as valid ID:

Credit Cards (Please check with test center)

Private identification cards

Any expired ID

Read the testing center regulation form carefully: You will be provided with a Testing Center Regulation form by the supervisor. Read the regulations carefully and comply with them during the test.

Sign the confidentiality statement: The supervisor is responsible for asking you to sign the confidentially statement at the test center indicating that you will not reveal exam questions to other students after the test.

Supervisor sets up your test computer: The supervisor will ensure that the Cisco certification test displays on screen before handing over the machine to you.

Ask for sheets for scratch work: Scratch papers will be provided to you at the testing center. These are sometimes only available on request. Ask for some blank scratch sheets to do calculations and rough work. Jot down important points and tables (such as powers of 2, binary representation tables etc) before exam starts. This can be a big time saver. Do not take the scratch paper out of the testing room on completion of exam.

Items not allowed in the testing room: The candidate is not allowed to bring in the testing room personal items such as:

Books, revision sheets or notes: The exam is closed book

Cellular phones & alarms

Food or drinks may not be allowed

Calculators

Your session may be audio and video taped: Do not attempt to talk or communicate in any form to anybody in the testing room. Your session may be taped and can lead to immediate disqualification .

On exam completion: You will be explained by the supervisor what to do when you complete the exam. If not, or if you are unclear about what you should do, ask it yourself before beginning the exam.

Do not take with you the the testing material from the testing room: Return all of your testing materials, including the scrap paper, on the completion of your exam to the supervisor.

Certified copy of the exam result: Your supervisor will give you a certified copy of the exam report on completion of the test. This will list your score indicating strengths and weaknesses in the various test areas. Ask the supervisor for the certified copy, if you do not get it.
