I used to host a home online poker game where we’d always have this one guy who played online poker wild and loose all game long. What drove me crazy about him was that for the most part, he was pretty successful with his style. He’d make these ridiculous calls and bluffs with rags and he’d usually show his bluff after the fact. Later in the poker online game, once somebody had been infuriated enough to call him, he’d actually finally have a good hand and rake in the chips anyway. Often, he’d walk away empty-handed, but he’d win enough to drive me crazy every time he did. Finally, I just decided to start playing him honestly. If I wasn’t reasonably sure that I had the winning hand, I’d let him have it when he started throwing his chips around, but when I knew that I had a great hand, I’d start raising him back or I’d start check-raising him, allowing him to fatten the pot as well as my chip stack. If you play a maniac honestly and burn him with some good hands early enough, he’ll start playing a lot more warily around you, or he’ll end up giving you all his chips. Either way, don’t bother bluffing these guys or trying to draw out against them-play them when you’ve got the cards, and let them break themselves.

When I asked him if this was his first time playing poker, he went nuts and started betting big with every hand. His stack didn’t last a trip around the table, and by the time he was tapped out, everyone else at the table got a piece of him.
