Let Little Boys Have Fun with a Bug Themed Party
Saturday 28 August 2010 @ 11:43 am

At first sight, a bug-themed party appears very weird- but bug themed birthday parties can be a lot of fun for kids, and help condition them about science and nature. Since some kids are afraid of insects, giving these insects a personality will help ease the children’s concerns, and help put them at ease when outdoors, or around bugs. Watching your kids run around dressed like a dragon fly, or grasshopper, or in ladybug decorations, by Bugs-n-Blooms can be a wonderful memory for a lot of parents. Once kids get into character, they tend to really enjoy frightening each other and getting a response out of everyone there. Letting them in on the decorating will also help them get more involved. There are plenty of spring themed cups and plates accessible, without having to go to a high priced specialty store. You don’t have to spend a lot to have fun. Little games like ‘pin the spider on the web’ will help children be more relaxed around these creepy crawlers, and as soon as they get the chance to place the spider in the center of the web; they are ready to go back for more. Another fun game is the game ‘run, ants, run!’ This is played by choosing one partygoer to be the leader, and getting all the other ants run around behind him, no matter which way he turns. Putting up obstacles along the way will make it more interesting and fun for all those engaged. When the leader yells ‘Run!’ all the other ants have to race back to base before getting tagged. Only the last ant standing wins the prize ~ Searching the internet for themed foods is very simple, and will provide you with lots of ideas such as ‘ants on a log’. This party favorite is nothing more than a celery stalk filled with peanut butter and a few raisins on top. Insect candy like gummy worms and jelly spiders can be scattered over foods to give them that really creepy feeling. These parties seem to work well for little boys, rather than little girls for some reason… but no matter who is invited, or what the affair is, a bug themed party will go a long way to filling up these summer days.

Information on Pipe Organs
Saturday 5 June 2010 @ 4:03 am

The pipe organ is a extraordinary & interesting instrument. Organs may possess one or several keyboards played by the hands, and a pedal board played by the feet, each of which has its own set of stops. Almost all pipe music has a real melodic theme with dark overtones. The timbre of pipe music is healthy and woody. This united with the smooth form of the tune provides an impressive tone. The reed organ is smaller, more low-priced and more movable. The brilliant sounds the pipe organ creates allows it to be used for numerous other things. The thought of the pipe organ is that you push air through the pipage system and presto! You have sound! Skinny tubes formulate the high pitched notes while the bigger pipes produce lower tones.

The organ is a rather masterful musical instrument but it is also stunning and majestic. The music from a pipe organ is magical; even a uninformed, casual listeners will be uplifted by the complexity of tones from a true organ just as one night choose a live performance to a recording. They were engineered to meld in harmoniousness with the human voice, making the organ the perfect instrument to use in worship services world wide. In the steam organ, wind is created by utilizing pressurized steam instead of air. Organ music has played primary part in music and it has molded numerous composers. Organs are often seen in church buildings, the tones of the pipe organ add to the exceptional spirit of the church.

One fascinating organ is actually worked out of a natural origin! The Great Stalacpipe Organ it is based in the Luray Canons of Virginia. It is utilized by hitting covered hammers on the stalactites.
As the demand for pipe organs have changed through time, so has the way pipe organ service offerings continue to change to serve our needs.

We hope you find this useful. Note: we also write articles about marketing for nonprofits.

Competition Breeds Affordability
Sunday 21 March 2010 @ 3:11 pm

Nobody likes a monopoly. Well, maybe I should say almost nobody, because the monopolies are probably quite happy to be sitting where they are sitting. An article in the New York Times today says that people in France can get “Internet service twice as fast as what you get from Verizon or Comcast, bundled with digital high-definition television, unlimited long distance and international calling to 70 countries and wireless Internet connectivity for your laptop or smart phone throughout much of the country,” all for $33 a month.

That’s a pretty good deal when compared to what we have available here in the U.S. Considering that I am paying just over $60 a month just for broadband internet from Comcast, I would jump at a deal like the one described above. I pay just $20 or so more for the DISH Network deal I have that gives me a boatload of HD channels.

However, where I live, Comcast owns broadband. In other words, there is no other place to go to get it. It’s either Comcast broadband or dial-up. As much as I dislike doing business with Comcast, they more-or-less have me over a barrel. I need broadband internet and they are the only ones offering it.

I have relatives that live in a more populated area than I do. They had been Comcast customers for years as well, until Verizon brought their FiOS fiber-optic service to their area. They quickly dumped Comcast and signed up for FiOS, as did many of their neighbors. This is the kind of thing that really spooks a monopoly. So much so that they are sending salespeople door-to-door in the neighborhood where my relatives live, and offering all kinds of special low-cost deals in an attempt to lure customers back to Comcast. That’s just the kind of story I just love to hear.

The same thing will happen if another company manages to bring broadband access to our region. It may be a few years off, since we live in a very rural area, but when it does happen, you can be sure I will be giving Comcast’s competition a good, hard look, and jumping on the bandwagon if the service they are offering is comparable to Comcast.

Unfortunately for those of us here in the U.S., special interest groups financed by big industry keep regulations in place that stifle competition. If those regulations are ever eliminated, we just might have a shot at some of that cheap French-style broadband access.

Brandon Routh as Superman
Tuesday 1 December 2009 @ 12:32 pm

I wrote this after hearing about the casting of Brandon Routh in the new Superman movie. Interesting how things have changed since then and having seen the actual film.

We have a new Superman!

Warner Brothers has announced its choice to play Superman in its reboot of the Superman movie franchise. “Superman Returns” is slated to begin production in 2005, with Brandon Routh as the Supes-du-jour.

So who is Brandon Routh?

The 25-year old actor is best known for his work on the soap opera “One Life to Live”. He also did a one-year stint on the MTV short-soap “Undressed”. Other than that, Brandon Routh has a few television appearances on series like “Will and Grace”, “Cold Case” and “Gilmore Girls”. Other than that, there is not much there.

I like that the studio got a no-name for the part. You can get big name actors to play Luthor and Lois, if you need star power. Get Brando to redo Jor-El, if you like. But I don’t want to see Nicholas Cage or Tom Cruise in the red cape. That would have killed the movie’s whole ambience. “Superman Returns” would have been another vehicle for Nicholas Cage…like the world needs another one of those. So I’m giving Warner Brothers points for courage.

Beyond that, I will wait to see the finished product. Since I have never seen Mr. Routh act, I can’t comment on whether he has the chops. His resume shows us a soap opera actor, which usually means someone who looks good delivering bad lines in a bad fashion. From the few photos I’ve seen, Brandon Routh looks like a young Tom Cruise. While it’s hard to tell from a headshot, he hardly looks like an imposing figure. Hopefully, Routh will fill out the costume of Superman. Perhaps it’s time to hit the gym.

As for his acting ability, how bad can it be? God love him, but Christopher Reeve was about as wooden as the Floronic Man. So it’s not as if Brandon Routh needs to be the next Olivier. Mostly, he needs to be believable and likable. Routh can stand aside for the villain to chew up scenery and deliver most of the good lines. If these prerequisites are met, I can live with the new choice. And the studio can take comfort that, if the moviemakers do their job, when it comes time for “Superman Returns 2″ (or is that Superman 6?), Brandon Routh will be a household name.

Digi Camera Captures Chinese Lanterns
Thursday 12 November 2009 @ 8:53 am

The popularity of Chinese lanterns has been on the up this summer and the squad at Chinese Lanterns have had some great fun attempting to capture high quality pic’s on film of these beautiful lanterns heading skyward in the evenings.Well in all honestness we have been utilizing digital cam’s as opposed to film because of the ease of operation and manipulation of the photo’s;Quick edit and instant playback of shots as well as the power to take snaps in the 1000’s in a single expedition! The capacity cap of my old polaroid 24 snaps camera seems antiquated by comparison. Video recording is now a handy included extra for some impromptu Spielberg seconds and is littering the webspace known as YouTube as you read this.I bought a camera last week and can assure you it was an involved and lengthy process. With so many brands models and technical features to get your head around not to mention the reviews that tend to contradict each other to some extent. It can be a bit difficult at the best of times. From my experience it pays to have a good resource site such as dPreview on speed dial this site classes the camera by features, price, and popularity It also features user established content and some well written articles on the different models. At the end of the day no amount of reviews or spec’s can make the conclusion for you. You really need to get one in your grip to know what feels right for your style of photography

What Are the Origins of the Tarot?
Wednesday 11 November 2009 @ 8:33 am

The origins of the Tarot have been attributed a wide range of wacky sources paleolithic cave paintings, gypsy folk lore, Moroccan mystics and even gifts from space aliens to Egyptian priests!. Most of these stories are, of course, speculation of the wildest, most ridiculous kind, and only serve to muddy the waters when it comes to understanding the Tarot. If you’re going to use the cards, it’s important to understand where they come from so that you know their rich history, their potential and their value and not put faith in silly urban legends.

Tarot on parade

The first mention of the cards was in Italy in the 14th century, called “Tarocco” and used for games and already, authorities were lecturing against its use. The first known deck was made for the Vicsconzi-Sforza family of Milan, designed by the artist Bembo. According to Tarot expert Gertrude Moakley, the various characters illustrated in the major arcana represented the triomfi, or parade, that accompanied Italian celebrations.

Historians believe that there may have been other cards that existed to represent other characters but have disappeared over time. Few decks of Tarot cards exist for those early days, but there’s enough similarity in artwork to make it clear that the deck was in common use in that time. Some historians believe that the Tarot was originally only used as a gaming deck to play a game called tarocchi until occultists began using them for divination.

Taking Europe by storm

The next big milestone in Tarot’s history came in the late 1700’s when Court de Gebelen, a member of a secret society of occultists, came across the a game of tarocchi and became obsessed with the cards. He believed them to be imbued with important symbolism which he attributed to ancient Egyptian lore. De Geblen wrote a nine-volume treatise titled “Le Monde Primitif” in which he discussed the meanings of the Tarot. That he attributed the Tarot’s symbolism to the Egyptian’s was based less on any real fact than on the fascination that Europeans had with Egypt at that time, believing it to be the center of all of man’s early wisdom. Use of the cards for divination spread during that time, with a book by a man named Etteilla in 1783, in which he offered his interpretations of the cards. In fact, professional mystics began using the Tarot throughout Europe, although there was no consensus of what the cards actually meant.
